Can Working With The Subconscious Mind Help Gender Equality?

March 8th is International Women’s Day, a day where events all over the world are held to celebrate the achievements of inspirational women everywhere.

This year’s theme is Make It Happen, seeking to encourage effective action to advance female equality and ensure their recognition. Whilst women all over the world will be running races, wearing their best purple outfits and conducting media interviews, we thought we would look at ways women can improve their economic, social and financial development as strong and independent individuals by working with the subconscious mind.

Katty Kay and Claire Shipman are the authors of The Confidence Code: The Science and Art of Self-Assurance—What Women Should Know; in their book they examine what they believe is a ‘confidence gap’ between men and women in the workplace. They believe this lack of self-belief is a serious contributing factor to what prevents many women from progressing at work. Their collected research suggests that women underestimate their abilities more often than men; women applied for promotions only when they have 100% of the requested qualifications, whereas men applied with as few as 50% of the requested qualifications. Both men and women suffer from negative self-perception, but the research suggests that women are more likely to let such thoughts prevent them from taking chances and progressing professionally.

Improving self-confidence could be key in encouraging women to apply for more promotions, and allow them to comfortably and assertively take rewarding chances in the work place. Why not look at your career history – were there times you decided not to apply for a promotion, or you didn’t believe in yourself? If so, it may be time to work on your self-confidence to help you push forward in your career or business.

  1. Don’t Let Anxiety Get In The Way Of Success

A huge percentage of people suffer from a fear of public speaking, with the prospect of having to talk in front of a crowd leading to uncomfortable physical symptoms such as sweating, nausea and trembling. Although public speaking affects men and women equally, women are also more likely to suffer from overall anxiety disorders that can contribute to social anxiety and make public relations even more difficult. According to the World Health Organization mental health issues such as anxiety and depression can affect as many as 1 in 3 women, making work responsibilities such as networking, conducting meetings, and even speaking on the telephone more difficult. Someone suffering from social anxiety may also be more fearful of criticism and therefore less likely to take risks in the workplace which could advance their career.

Addressing the issue of mental health, particularly anxiety, could be another way to improve women’s self-confidence, allowing them to thrive in the workplace without the worries and fears caused by anxiety. If you are suffering from anxiety, or find yourself worrying excessively about speeches or networking events, you could benefit from addressing the underlying cause of these worries, to help you more comfortably progress your personal goals.

  1. Take Time To Relax

A study by the American Psychological Association found that one-third of employees suffer from chronic work-related stress. The research also found that women are more likely to report higher levels of work stress, as well as feeling that they are underappreciated and underpaid. Stress can have a serious effect on your health, leaving you exhausted and ill. If stress negatively affects an individual’s health, this could lead to reduced work productivity and negatively impact on their long-term professional advancement.

Take time to address your stress levels; this could be through a nightly ritual of a hot bath and good book, or practising mindfulness to help you manage the worries and pressures of your busy modern life. Taking care of your wellbeing, to become more relaxed and at ease, could have powerful and positive effects on your ability to perform your job with confidence and poise.

  1. Address Your Bad Habits

Not only does stress itself lead to health issues, but the coping mechanisms adopted to deal with stress can cause their own problems. On a subconscious level individuals often turn towards comforting, but unhealthy, habits to deal with the stress: this could be eating too much junk food, smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol.

Women are more likely to develop unhealthy emotional eating habits and eating disorders, and although men are more likely to develop an alcohol dependency, women are less likely to seek help from their health care providers for such an issue. Bad habits can have serious consequences on your emotional and physical health, impacting on your quality of life and your personal relationships, as well as your ability to work productively and effectively in the workplace.

Addressing the bad habits that impact on your emotional and physical well-being can have a huge impact on all aspects of your life. Improving your health by quitting smoking, eating a healthier diet, and reducing alcohol consumption can improve your energy and your concentration, and lessen the amount of time you spend sick.
